JSMC course: Bioluminescence based reporter assays in a green eukaryotic unicellular alga

Organizer: Prasad Aiyar, PD Dr. Volker Wagner and Prof. Dr. Maria Mittag, Institute of General Botany and Plant Physiology, Friedrich Schiller University Jena

Date: Feb 20 - 21, 2017

The workshop provides a theoretical overview over different bioluminescence systems that are currently used for reporter assays and teaches the students how to use luciferase based reporters in practice based on two different luciferase examples.

  • Bioluminescence measurements in transgenic alga that express a luciferase reporter fused to a 3’-untranslated region containing and lacking a translational relevant cis-acting element, respectively
  • Bioluminescence reporter assays for measuring changes in Ca2+ ions upon different abiotic stimuli

Location: Am Planetarium 1

Meeting Point: 9 am, 1. Floor of the Institute of General Botany, Practical room, Am Planetarium 1

The number of participants will be limited to 6 in order to assure a workshop environment conducive to “hand to hand” exercises. Students only need a basic background in gene expression and cell biology.
