JSMC course: Flow cytometry for leukocyte analysis

Organizer: Dr. Susann Hartung and Dr. Susanne Jahreis, Prof. von Lilienfeld-Toal, Infections in Hematology/Oncology, Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology – Hans Knöll Institute (HKI)

Date: November 12 - 13, 2018

Theme of the workshop:

The workshop will introduce the participants to flow cytometry and its application for the quantitative measurement of cell marker expression. The emphasis will be on how a successful experiment is to be planned. Although the method can be applied to all cell types, we will discuss human leukocytes as an example.

Topics:

  • Theoretical introduction to flow cytometry
  • Fluorescent dyes in flow cytometry: How do I choose the right color(s)?
  • Multicolor flow cytometry: How do I combine colors?
  • Compensation of spectral overlap of dyes
  • Setup of a flow cytometer
  • Analysis of flow cytometric data using FlowJo software
  • Hands-on training: choice of fluorophores, isolation of leukocytes, staining of cell surface markers, setup of a cytometric experiment including compensation, measurement at the flow cytometer, data analysis

Location: Infections in Hematology / Oncology, Hans-Knöll-Institute, Beutenbergstraße 11a

Meeting Point and time: 12.11.2018 at 9 am, seminar room Pasteur, Hans-Knöll-Institut, Beutenbergstraße 11a

The number of participants will be limited to 5 in order to assure a workshop environment conducive to “hand to hand” exercises. Students only need a basic background in cell biology.

It is possible to discuss the setup of your own flow cytometric experiments during the workshop. If you have planned an experiment, please let us now when you register.

To register please send an email to office(at)jsmc.info
