Jena Alliance "Life in Focus" course: Inferring Phylogeny Based on Sequence Information

Organizer: Florian Rümpler, Lydia Gramzow & Günter Theißen, Matthias Schleiden Institute – Genetics, FSU Jena

Date: March 21 - 22, 2019

Theme of the workshop:

During the practical course we will use different (predominantly web-based) bioinformatical tools to search for orthologous gene and protein sequences, create multiple sequence alignments, retranslate aligned protein sequences into codon-alignments and reconstruct the phylogenetic relationship of the examined sequences. Additional exercises will be performed to elucidate the principle of phylogeny inference and to train the correct interpretation of phylogentic trees and related issues.

Topics: Tree thinking, phylogeny inference, bootstrapping, Bayesian phylogenetics

Location: Matthias Schleiden Institute – Genetics, Philosophenweg 12, 07743 Jena, Germany

Meeting Point: will be announced (probably room 124 or 316 at the address given above)

The number of participants will be limited to 10 in order to assure a workshop environment conducive to “hand to hand” exercises.
