MiCoCo Stars: Crossing host (innate) immune barriers

Lecturer: Prof. Dr. Peter F. Zipfel, Infection Biology, Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology -Hans Knöll Institute (HKI)

Abstract:

Infectious pathogenic microbes control the hostile immune environment of the human host. In order to propagate every infectious pathogen has to inactivate all innate and adaptive immune barriers of their hosts. Diverse microbial pathogens use related evasion strategies and express functionally related factors that block the destructive and inflammatory immune reactions. Thus different pathogens use related multifunctional microbial immune evasion proteins which have evolved by convergent evolution. The identification and molecular analyses of these microbial proteins provides mechanistic insights for microbial immune evasion and also for understanding of the protective role of the immune systems the human host.
