JSMC course: Project management for PhD studies

Organizer: Dr. Anne-Christin Warskulat, Curiositas

Date: November 8 - 9, 2018

After the first excitement of starting of your PhD project, a work routine quickly emerges and you have to make choices to dedicate your time to tasks that all seem important and urgent at the same time. This requires a balancing act to meet deadlines, explore new ideas or approaches, collaborate on promising projects, prepare meetings or presentations and conduct your own research. Due to the demands of day-to-day business, it is easy to lose sight of the long-term goal that is to complete doctoral thesis.

How can you better structure and organize your doctorate, keep track of your progress and avoid crises during your PhD?

Established tools and procedures of Project management can help meet these challenges. During the first part of this highly interactive workshop, participants learn the basics of project management and apply this knowledge to their particular circumstances. The formalization of structured approach to organizing your doctoral work will shed light on underlying expectations for the various aspects and partners of a project. Afterwards, participants will discuss which steps of project management are most useful or beneficial for their own PhD projects.

In the second part, participants will start to apply project management principles to their own PhD project. They will work out a detailed analysis of the current and final goals of their doctorate. This helps to evaluate the progress successes and bottlenecks, and to identify necessary steps towards achieving the long-term goals of the doctoral work. Participants will work on an individual plan of action to incorporate principles of project management in their daily routine. Finally, solutions for possible setbacks and obstacles will be explored in a group discussion format.

This interactive workshop consists of group and contemplation exercises as well as short presentations from Dr. Anne-Christin Warskulat. Participants are welcome to propose additional topics of interest that can be addressed during the second day. Participants will be expected to bring their existing PhD project description or plan to the workshop.

Location: JSMC building, Neugasse 23, seminar room 101

The number of participants will be limited to 16 in order to assure a workshop environment conducive to “hand to hand” exercises.
