Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI-BGC): The institute examines how ecosystems and biogeochemical cycles interact with changes in climate, land use and diversity. Biogeochemical transformations are interlinked and controlled by diversity and biology of the (micro)organisms. Biodiversity is studied focusing on plants, fungi, and bacteria. The institute’s program includes the planning and implementation of critical model experiments, and the comparison between models and observations. Central facilities supply chemical and stable isotope analyses, and field campaign organization.
