Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology (MPI-CE): The MPI-CE examines the role of chemical signals that mediate the interactions between plants, animals, and their environment, as well as the evolutionary and behavioral consequences of these interactions. The primary research focus is on the coevolution of plants with insect herbivores, and their interactions with microorganisms. The study of plant defense mechanisms against insects, for example, involves an interdisciplinary approach that incorporates ecology, biochemistry, microbiology, population genetics, as well as analytic and synthetic organic chemistry. The departments are supported by service groups in mass spectroscopy and NMR. The institute has facilities for field studies with transgenic plants.
