The institute of nutrition - first institute of nutrition in the eastern states of Germany - was founded in 1990. It is located in the buildings Dornburger street 24 (former institute of animal nutrition), 25-29 (former animal clinic), as well as Thomas-Mann-street 44. The institute is embedded in an interdisciplinary environment at the faculty of biology and pharmacy and possesses a modern infrastructure for research and teaching. There are four chairs, two departments and one junior research team associated with the institute, which work one current aspects of nutrition research.  Scientific focus areas of the institute are the development, prevention and intervention of diet-related diseases such as cancer, obesity, diabetes, arteriosclerosis, rheumatism, psychological/pathological effects of vitamins, fatty acids, antioxidants, fiber and furthermore age-related changes in diet and metabolism.

On average 500 students are enrolled at the bachelor degree course "food science" of the institute and the master degree course "molecular nutrition".
